How is the Process Efficiency Toolbox™ different from idea management software?2022-07-18T16:28:52-05:00

Idea management software comes with no ideas.  Typically, ideas are added by crowdsourcing and the ideas are selected by a search or a scoring system.  Scoring can often be quite misleading. If everybody scores the idea, then the score tends to become diluted. If an idea is scored by a small group, then the score can easily be biased.

The Process Efficiency Toolbox comes already populated with process improvement ideas, questions and rule logic.  An idea is only presented when the artificial intelligence believes it is applicable.   For example, assume a corporation has 20 plants and has added a great reverse osmosis idea. Only the users who answer questions in a specific way will see the new idea. If 12 plants don’t have a reverse osmosis system, then they will never see the idea because it doesn’t apply to them. If 4 more plants are utilizing a sodium bisulfate pre-treatment, they will never see the idea because it doesn’t apply. If 2 more plants are using well water as the feedwater, they will never see the idea because it doesn’t apply. Only 2 plants will ever see the idea because it only applies to their plants.

Are all shared ideas used?2020-05-12T07:59:11-05:00

Not all shared ideas are used.  Each idea must be approved by its system expert group.  This process helps insure that only quality ideas are included in each system.

What if I want to change share my ideas contact me permission?2020-05-18T09:31:57-05:00

You can change the share my ideas contact me permission option any time.  Simply go into your user profile and make the change.  The change would go into effect immediately for all past and future shared ideas.

Why is Troubleshooting included in Knowledge Categories?2021-01-26T07:03:25-05:00

All Knowledge Categories are types of process improvements.  Without accurate and timely Troubleshooting, some process upsets can quickly spread and lead to major environmental and economic impacts.  Troubleshooting helps to maximize system efficiency by minimizing upset conditions.

Can I request a new System / Knowledge category?2022-03-31T12:06:42-05:00

Yes certainly.  Please go to Support Request and select Request Type “Request a New System / Knowledge Category”.  Since you are a community member, we will prioritize your request.

How can a generic system such as “Pump” relate to my very specific pump?2021-01-26T07:05:57-05:00

System questions are asked based on conditional logic.  This means the next question asked is based on your answer to the current question.  Typically within the first few questions very detailed questions will be asked concerning your specific equipment.

How can I share multiple ideas?2020-05-10T09:20:32-05:00

Multiple ideas may be shared in an Excel spreadsheet, Google Sheets or comma-separated value (CSV) format.  At a minimum, please include one column for the ideas.  You may include other columns that have more information about the idea.  Submit multiple ideas by going to: Community menu > Share Ideas > “Submit an Idea – File”

Why do I need any more ideas when I already have enough ideas?2020-02-13T09:06:04-05:00

Our ideas are generated by a logic rule based approach.  This approach is thorough to prevent any missed opportunities.  Our ideas are non-biased, whereas many existing ideas are based on what is already familiar.   It is often true that “you can’t see the forest through the trees” meaning focusing on small ideas and missing the big opportunities.

How do you consider relationships between systems, because systems don’t always act independently?2021-01-26T07:11:28-05:00

Systems relations are addressed by the path of the questions asked.  This allows each system relationship to be handled uniquely.  Typically the relationship will be explored by first asking a question if another system is present.  If another system is present, then more detailed questions will be asked based on answers provided.  This will very quickly lead to very specific system relationship questions being asked.

What type of process improvement ideas can I contribute?2020-05-13T09:01:44-05:00

We want ideas, tips, suggestions and best practices that improve a process.  What we don’t want is proprietary information.  For example, we don’t want the secret ingredient in a formula that gives the product a special property.

The ideas should focus on:

  • Reducing wasted materials
  • Reducing emissions
  • Reducing energy usage
  • Increasing quality
  • Increasing capacity
  • Increasing process efficiency
  • Reducing usage of hazardous materials
  • Reducing water usage
  • Increasing production capacity
  • Reducing downtime¹
  • Troubleshooting¹

¹Process upsets often result in significant amounts of waste generated. Ideas for reducing downtime and troubleshooting are included to help minimize process upsets.

Why should I contribute my process improvement ideas?2022-03-31T12:17:24-05:00

There are several reasons that people contribute ideas:

  • When you share your process improvement idea you become part of a world-wide community dedicated to improving our environment.
  • When your company has multiple sites using this software, you may wish to share ideas within your company to encourage best practices.
  • This professional community recognizes professional achievement with certifications and ranks, etc. which can be used to document professional ability.
  • Networking within the community.
How does billing for multiple site facilities work?2021-01-02T07:52:40-05:00

Individual sites can be invoiced separately.  Alternatively, the site administrator who manages all company users can be invoiced for all of the sites.  Invoices can be billed either monthly, quarterly or annually.

Will all the suggested process improvement ideas be applicable?2022-03-31T12:19:22-05:00

First remember the phrase “data in equals data out”.  Assuming all of the data input is accurate and if you generate 10 process improvement ideas, you can probably expect:

  • 2-3 great process improvement applicable ideas
  • 2-3 good process improvement applicable ideas
  • 2-3 average process improvement applicable ideas
  • 2-3 not applicable ideas

The quality of XPS ideas and logic is continuously improving, as technology advances.

How can individual systems model my production process?2022-03-31T12:22:08-05:00

Manufacturing processes are composed of unique combinations of individual interacting systems.  Our systems are the building blocks for a unique process.  The interactions between systems are addressed in the questions asked.  Questions can function to weave systems together.  This allows each system relationship to be handled uniquely.  If another system is present, then more detailed questions will be asked based on answers provided.  This will very quickly lead to very specific system relationship questions being asked.

I don’t understand how a generic system name can relate to my specific system?2022-03-31T12:21:02-05:00

The first few questions asked will typically drill down to your very specific system.  For example, we have a “pump” system rather than the following systems:

  • pumps, centrifugal
  • pumps, gear
  • pumps, magnetic drive
  • pumps, air diaphragm
  • pumps, peristaltic
  • pumps, electric
  • pumps, water

The first few questions asked in the pump system will narrow down your specific pump to the degree required to provide process improvement ideas.  The questions also allow for helping a user even if pieces of information are unknown.

Another reason for not specifically naming all subsystems is that this would have created many hundreds more systems.  This would have made the tool harder to use.
